Current COVID-19 vaccines not effective against Omicron claims CEO of Moderna

Sydney: Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna, recently claimed that current COVID-19 vaccines were expected to be inefficacious against the new variant of COVID-19, Omicron.

"There is no world, I think, where [the effectiveness] is the same level ... we had with [the] Delta [variant]," he told news agencies.

Stéphane Bancel further acknowledged that there is going to be a "material drop". However, he was not sure about the amount of material drop. Nonetheless, as per his sources, it would not be good.

As cases of Omicron are surging in various parts of the globe, the drug makers are competing to produce vaccines that can be effective against this new variant of COVID-19. Officials of Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer have asserted that they had started trials of their vaccines against Omicron. However, the results will take some time.
