Justin Timberlake reveals lyme disease diagnosis and debilitating symptoms

Justin Timberlake has revealed he has been diagnosed with lyme disease, shedding light on his ongoing health struggles.

The 44-year-old singer shared his diagnosis on Instagram, explaining that he has been battling “relentlessly debilitating” symptoms, including severe nerve pain, fatigue, and recurring sickness. Despite these challenges, Timberlake completed his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, citing the “joy that performing brings” him as his motivation.

“I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with lyme disease—which I don’t say so you feel bad for me—but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes,” Timberlake wrote.

He added that his decision to go public was about being “more transparent” with fans, while also helping others who may be silently struggling with the condition.

Understanding lyme disease

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in North America and Europe, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through bites from infected black-legged ticks.

Common symptoms include:

  • A red “bulls-eye” rash (erythema migrans) at the bite site
  • Painful arthritis in untreated cases
  • Neurological issues such as Bell palsy, meningitis, memory loss, and numbness
  • Fatigue, body aches, fever, and sleep disturbances

If left untreated, lyme disease can cause long-term complications, but early treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications is often effective.

Prevention tips against lyme disease

  • Wear protective clothing outdoors (long sleeves and pants)
  • Use tick repellents with DEET or permethrin
  • Check your skin thoroughly after spending time in wooded or grassy areas
  • Promptly remove any visible ticks

Why Justin Timberlake’s revelation matters

Timberlake’s disclosure brings greater awareness to a condition that often goes underdiagnosed or misunderstood. With more than 300,000 cases of lyme disease reported annually in the US alone, his openness may encourage fans and the wider public to take prevention, early detection, and treatment seriously.

By sharing his journey, Timberlake has highlighted both the physical and emotional toll of the disease, while also offering hope to others living with the condition.
