KHAIRPUR: A virus once seen as distant is now raising alarm bells much closer to home — and this time, the most vulnerable are children.
Health authorities in Sindh are on high alert after three children in Khairpur district tested positive for mpox, a development that is rapidly turning into a major public health concern with possible implications far beyond one district. The confirmations, made by the Public Health Laboratory Karachi and Aga Khan University, have intensified fears that delayed containment could allow the virus to spread among minors and family clusters. Recent mpox alerts in Karachi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have already kept surveillance teams on edge across Pakistan.
What makes the situation especially alarming is that one of the infected children is an infant under one year of age, highlighting the seriousness of exposure in highly vulnerable age groups. Medical experts say pediatric cases require urgent attention because close-contact transmission inside households can accelerate silently before symptoms are recognized.

According to officials, the cases were independently confirmed through advanced diagnostic testing, adding credibility and urgency to the response. Authorities now fear that Khairpur could become the center of a localized pediatric mpox outbreak if isolation and contact tracing are not enforced immediately.
Dr. Saeed Khan, Director of the Public Health Laboratory at Dow University Hospital's OJHA Campus, warned that the virus can spread easily from person to person, particularly in close-contact environments where awareness is low and symptoms may initially be dismissed.
That warning is critical because mpox transmission commonly occurs through skin-to-skin contact, contaminated bedding, clothing, respiratory droplets during prolonged close interaction, and household exposure, making children especially vulnerable in shared living settings.

Public health specialists are now urging immediate preventive steps, including strict isolation of infected children, active screening of close contacts, hygiene reinforcement, and aggressive community awareness campaigns to prevent panic-driven spread and misinformation.
The bigger concern is no longer just the three confirmed cases. It is whether this cluster represents the visible tip of a wider silent transmission chain already moving through families and neighborhoods.
If rapid containment begins now, Khairpur may avoid a larger outbreak. If not, this could become Sindh’s next major pediatric infectious disease emergency.
