Pakistan, Kazakhstan strengthen healthcare education and research through historic academic pact
ISLAMABAD: In a move highlighting deepening educational and diplomatic ties, Pakistan and Kazakhstan have forged a landmark partnership in medical research and training. The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore and Astana Medical University signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Islamabad to promote joint research, faculty exchange, and professional development across healthcare disciplines.
The MoU was signed at Allama Iqbal Open University in the presence of Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Kazakhstan’s Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek. The ceremony also included UHS Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Nadia Naseem, Astana Medical University Rector A.A. Turmukhambetova, and Vice Rector Ayan Myssayev.
The agreement comes on the eve of the official visit of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who arrives in Pakistan today (February 3) for a two-day official visit. During his visit, President Tokayev is scheduled to meet his Pakistani counterpart President Asif Ali Zardari, hold talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and address the Pakistan-Kazakhstan Business Forum, reflecting growing bilateral engagement in multiple sectors.
Expanding academic collaboration
Under the MoU, UHS and Astana Medical University will collaborate in joint scientific research, development of innovative healthcare technologies, exchange of faculty and students, and organisation of seminars, workshops, and professional training programmes. The partnership also includes collaborative publications, shared academic resources, and professional development for healthcare personnel.

Officials highlighted that this collaboration will strengthen research capacity in medicine, pharmacy, and nursing while opening new opportunities for students, faculty, and researchers in both countries.
“This agreement is part of broader efforts to enhance educational and scientific cooperation between Pakistan and Kazakhstan,” said UHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore.
Project-based implementation, long-term vision
The MoU does not involve immediate financial or legal obligations. Instead, its implementation will be carried out through separate project-based agreements. It is renewable automatically and includes provisions for confidentiality and amicable resolution of disputes. Experts say this flexible framework allows both institutions to pursue innovative, outcome-driven projects tailored to evolving healthcare challenges.

This partnership also positions higher education as a bridge between nations, enabling knowledge exchange and scientific advancement while strengthening Pakistan’s role in regional medical research and training.
