JSMU syndicate approves key initiatives to strengthen education, efficiency, and sustainability
KARACHI: The 36th meeting of the Syndicate of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU), chaired by Vice Chancellor Professor Amjad Siraj Memon, approved a series of strategic measures aimed at improving institutional efficiency, academic quality, and long-term sustainability.
The Syndicate ratified the minutes of the 24th Finance and Planning Committee meeting and endorsed a wide-ranging agenda covering financial management, academic programs, and human resource development.
Financial management, digital transactions
To improve fiscal discipline, the Syndicate approved the closure of dormant bank accounts and reaffirmed the petty cash ceiling in line with existing policy. It also authorized the use of a corporate debit card for online payments, a step intended to modernize financial operations and enhance transaction transparency.
Academic reforms, new programs
Several important academic decisions were taken to align programs with regulatory guidelines and student needs. The Syndicate approved a revised and reduced fee structure for the BS Occupational Therapy program by merging open merit and self-finance categories. A fee reduction for Semester 4 of the MHPE Batch 2022 was also endorsed following updated PMDC guidelines.
In addition, the Syndicate approved the launch of an evening Pharm.D. program, along with projected faculty requirements and revenue planning, expanding access to pharmaceutical education for working students.
Commitment to sustainability
In line with its sustainability goals, the Syndicate approved the installation of solar power systems across JSMU campuses. The initiative is expected to reduce energy costs and support the university’s environmental responsibility agenda.
Strengthening human resources, research
To support expanding campuses and major projects such as SAP implementation, the recruitment of essential IT staff was approved. The Syndicate also confirmed the appointment of a Director for the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) in accordance with Higher Education Commission requirements.

Selection boards for faculty appointments in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pathology were approved, reflecting JSMU’s focus on strengthening its teaching workforce.
Policy decisions, staff welfare
The Syndicate approved revised rates for specialized diagnostic tests outsourced to M/s Chugtai Lab to ensure continuity and quality of patient care services. A fixed honorarium framework for guest speakers and experts participating in university events was also endorsed.
A committee chaired by Professor Dr. Naushad Shaikh was formed to address the legalization of non-codal employees. Professor Shaikh was also approved for another term as the Syndicate’s nominee on the Finance and Planning Committee.

Additional approvals included outsourcing of academic degree verification, hiring faculty for HEC-mandated general education courses, and nomination of new office bearers for the JSMU Alumni Office.
