KARACHI: The administration of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi’s largest public healthcare facility, has rejected allegations circulating on social media that a woman delivered her baby inside a hospital washroom, terming the claims inaccurate and misleading.
The controversy originated from widely shared posts and videos suggesting that the patient was forced to give birth in a washroom due to alleged delays in medical attention. The incident triggered public concern and renewed debate over maternity care standards, emergency response efficiency, and overcrowding in public hospitals across Sindh.
In its official response, JPMC clarified that the patient did not deliver in a washroom and stated that the childbirth took place normally in the labour room at 2:50 a.m., where the woman received timely and appropriate medical care from attending staff.
Hospital officials further stated that the patient was already facing medical complications, including low platelet levels, which required close monitoring and specialized management during delivery. They also alleged that despite medical advice, the patient’s family chose to take her home against doctors’ recommendations after delivery.
To ensure transparency and address public concerns, the hospital administration has constituted a three-member inquiry committee with the approval of senior management. The committee will review the sequence of events, examine medical records, and assess whether all protocols were followed during the patient’s care.
The committee is headed by Professor Halima Yasmin and is expected to submit its findings to the Sindh Health Department. Officials said further action, if required, will be taken based on the committee’s recommendations.
The incident has already sparked wider discussion on social media and among healthcare observers, highlighting recurring concerns about emergency maternity services, patient communication gaps, and trust in public hospitals. However, authorities maintain that only a formal investigation will determine the factual circumstances behind the viral claims.
