SIUT team performs successful deceased organ transplant in Karachi
KARACHI: The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) has successfully performed a deceased organ donation kidney transplant, bringing new hope to patients waiting for life-saving treatment.
According to SIUT, the surgery was carried out in the early hours of July 30 by a skilled team of transplant surgeons, urologists, and anesthetists.
The donation came from Sultan Zafar, a 23-year-old dental surgery student who tragically met with a fatal accident and sustained severe head injuries. Despite intensive care, he was declared brain dead after a week in the ICU.
In a profound act of courage and generosity, Dr. Mehr Afroze, Sultan’s mother and a Consultant Nephrologist at SIUT, consented to donate her son’s two kidneys. The organs were successfully transplanted into two patients on long-term dialysis who had no family donors and were on the waiting list.
This compassionate gesture, made in the face of immense personal grief, has been widely praised by the medical community and society.
Prof. Adib Rizvi, Director of SIUT, lauded the family’s noble decision:
“This act of organ donation has given a new lease of life to two patients. It is an inspiring example for society to emulate in saving lives.”
The successful procedure highlights the critical importance of deceased organ donation in Pakistan, where thousands of patients wait for transplants each year. Experts emphasize that raising awareness and encouraging more families to come forward can transform countless lives.
