DUHS launches cardiac rehabilitation services at Ojha Campus
KARACHI: The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has inaugurated cardiac rehabilitation services at its Ojha Campus, expanding specialized care for heart patients under the management of the Dow Institute of Cardiology. The new facility is located on the ground floor of the OPD Block (Old Building).
The inauguration ceremony was led by DUHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazli Hussain, who unveiled the plaque and performed the ribbon-cutting. Distinguished guests included Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Jahan Ara Hassan, Principal Dow International Medical College Prof. Iftikhar Ahmed, Dr. Tariq Furman, Brig. Shoaib Ahmed, Dr. Rustam Zaman, Dr. Farhan Ishaq, and Dr. Faisal Yameen.
New service to support cardiac patients
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Nazli Hussain said the cardiac rehabilitation service would provide much-needed guidance and supervised support to patients recovering from angioplasty and bypass surgeries.
“This facility will help restore cardiac patients to normal lives and improve their confidence,” she added, extending prayers for the success of the new department.
Earlier, Prof. Nazli also led a walk and attended a seminar as chief guest on the occasion of World Heart Day.
Heart disease awareness
At the seminar, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Jahan Ara Hassan highlighted that cardiovascular diseases claim nearly 20 million lives annually worldwide, including around 500,000 in Pakistan. She stressed that many of these deaths could be prevented through regular monitoring of blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and compliance with prescribed medication. Public awareness programs such as walks and seminars, she added, are essential to reducing the burden of heart disease.
Comprehensive rehabilitation approach
Cardiology expert Dr. Tariq Furman noted that the number of cardiac patients continues to rise despite global preventive efforts. “Many patients consider themselves a burden on society. The Dow University Department of Cardiology strives to restore them to normal life, and this rehabilitation service is a cornerstone of that mission,” he said.
The facility will provide structured rehabilitation, counseling, and supervised exercise programs to help patients manage their condition and prevent future complications.
The ceremony concluded with the cutting of a specially prepared fresh fruit cake to mark the launch of the cardiac rehabilitation services.
