ISLAMABAD: Shifa International Hospitals has announced a major new milestone in Pakistan’s healthcare sector after achieving Joint Commission International (JCI) Enterprise Accreditation, while its Shifa Ambulance Service (SAS) became the first ambulance service in Pakistan to receive JCI Medical Transport Accreditation.
The development represents a significant expansion of internationally recognised healthcare quality and patient-safety standards beyond the walls of a hospital — reaching emergency response, medical transport and multiple points of care across the wider Shifa healthcare ecosystem.
Shifa said the achievement reflects a unified commitment to maintaining consistent standards of quality, patient safety, clinical excellence and evidence-based care across its facilities and services.

What does JCI Enterprise Accreditation mean?
For patients and the general public, accreditation can sometimes sound like a technical distinction with little relevance outside hospital management circles. But JCI describes international accreditation as a rigorous external assessment designed to determine whether a healthcare organisation meets established requirements relating to the quality and safety of care.
According to Joint Commission International, successful completion of its accreditation process signals that a healthcare organisation has undergone an exacting performance assessment and met a robust series of qualifications focused on patient safety and quality of care. JCI standards are designed to help organisations measure, assess and continuously improve their performance.
In Shifa’s case, Enterprise Accreditation is particularly significant because the organisation says the focus is not limited to a single hospital facility.
Instead, the accreditation reinforces Shifa’s effort to establish a more unified framework for quality, safety and clinical standards across its wider healthcare network and services.
That distinction could matter at every stage of a patient's healthcare journey — from emergency response and transport to hospital-based diagnosis and treatment.
Pakistan’s first JCI-accredited ambulance service
Perhaps the most significant public-facing milestone is the accreditation of Shifa Ambulance Service, which Shifa says has become the first ambulance service in Pakistan to receive JCI Medical Transport Accreditation. Recent reporting has also described the recognition as a first for Pakistan’s ambulance and pre-hospital emergency care sector.
The distinction pushes the conversation about healthcare quality beyond what happens after a patient reaches a hospital.
In a medical emergency, some of the most critical minutes can pass before the patient reaches an emergency department. That makes the quality of assessment, monitoring, communication and care during transport an important part of the wider patient-safety chain.
Shifa describes its ambulance operation as a dedicated emergency, inter-facility and inter-city medical transport service staffed by trained personnel and equipped to provide advanced medical support during emergencies and patient transfers. The service says its ambulances are intended to function as mobile treatment units rather than simply as vehicles for transporting patients.
For Pakistan, where emergency medical systems and pre-hospital care remain an important area of healthcare development, the first JCI accreditation for an ambulance service marks a notable institutional milestone.
Why the achievement matters beyond Shifa
JCI accreditation is not simply a certificate displayed on a wall.
JCI says its standards are intended to promote quality and patient safety by establishing measurable expectations for healthcare organisations. Its accreditation programmes can apply to different types of healthcare providers, including hospitals, academic medical centres, home-care providers and medical transport organisations.
For patients, the practical significance lies in the systems behind the care they receive — including processes intended to reduce unnecessary variation, identify safety risks, strengthen clinical and operational procedures and support continuous quality improvement.
That does not mean accreditation can guarantee a particular clinical outcome for every patient. Healthcare outcomes depend on many factors, including the nature and severity of illness or injury.
However, independent accreditation is designed to provide evidence that an organisation has been assessed against defined standards for the systems and processes supporting safe, high-quality care.
Building on Shifa’s earlier JCI milestones
The latest recognition also builds on Shifa International Hospitals’ previous history with JCI accreditation.
Shifa’s official records state that Shifa International Hospital Islamabad first received JCI accreditation in 2017, becoming the first public listed hospital in Pakistan to achieve the recognition. The hospital was subsequently re-accredited, and Shifa says it successfully achieved its third consecutive JCI accreditation cycle in 2024.
Shifa also reported earlier milestones involving other parts of its healthcare network, including the JCI accreditation of its home healthcare services.
More recently, Shifa International Hospitals Limited also announced an additional major international distinction in 2026 after receiving JCI recognition as an Academic Medical Center, linking clinical care with medical education and research standards.
The latest Enterprise Accreditation therefore represents another step in Shifa’s effort to extend internationally recognised systems across a broader healthcare ecosystem rather than concentrating quality frameworks within a single hospital setting.
