Heavy rainfall causes flooding in Jinnah Hospital Lahore emergency ward
LAHORE: Heavy rainfall in Lahore on Saturday caused severe disruption at Jinnah Hospital, as rainwater entered the newly built emergency ward and left the facility partially paralyzed.
Witnesses described alarming scenes as water poured from the ceiling “like streams,” flooding the emergency section and making it difficult for staff to manage patients. Despite several hours passing, the hospital administration has not been able to completely clear the standing water.
While the Medical Superintendent (MS) of Jinnah Hospital refrained from issuing an official statement, Principal Jinnah Hospital Professor Dr. Tayyaba Wasim confirmed the presence of water inside the emergency ward. She added that the MS would formally comment on the matter.
Provincial government takes urgent notice
The incident has prompted swift action from the Punjab government. Provincial Minister for Communication and Works (C&W), Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth, took notice of the rainwater accumulation and sought an immediate report from the Executive Engineer (XEN).
The minister directed the XEN and Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Buildings to urgently visit Jinnah Hospital, stop further water inflow, and propose a permanent solution to prevent such disruptions in the future.
Meanwhile, Secretary C&W Sohail Ashraf has ordered building section officers to take prompt remedial action to address the issue and ensure hospital services resume smoothly.
With government authorities now actively engaged, the situation underscores the urgent need for improved building standards and sustainable drainage systems in public hospitals to safeguard patient care during extreme weather.
