Nipah virus cases reported in India ahead of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup
MUMBAI: Reports of Nipah virus infections in India have emerged just weeks before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2026 raising public health concerns as international teams and thousands of cricket fans prepare to travel to the region. The tournament is scheduled to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
According to Indian media reports, at least five cases of Nipah virus have been confirmed in West Bengal, while health authorities have confirmed two cases of the deadly virus. Furthermore, health authorities have placed around 100 people under quarantine as part of emergency containment measures aimed at preventing further spread of the virus.
Among the infected are healthcare workers, including two nurses from Kolkata who are reported to be in serious condition. Their illness has intensified concerns about hospital-based transmission and the risk of exposure among frontline medical staff.
Nipah virus is a highly dangerous zoonotic infection that is primarily transmitted by fruit bats. It can also spread through contaminated food and close contact with infected individuals. India has faced previous Nipah virus outbreaks, especially in Kerala, where dozens of deaths have been reported since 2018. The World Health Organization has classified Nipah virus as a priority pathogen because of its potential to cause a widespread global outbreak.
The timing of the latest cases has drawn special attention due to the approaching cricket world cup, which is expected to bring large international crowds and increased cross-border travel. Public health specialists say mass gatherings can amplify the risk of disease transmission if surveillance and preventive measures are not strictly enforced.
Authorities in India are closely monitoring the situation and have urged vigilance among healthcare providers and the general public. Travelers are being advised to follow basic hygiene practices, avoid close contact with sick individuals, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as fever, headache, or respiratory distress develop.
Health experts stress that early detection, strict isolation of cases, and rapid contact tracing remain the most effective tools for controlling Nipah virus outbreaks.
