Experts reveal how to stay safe from harmful UV rays while saving hundreds — the truth about sunscreen costs might shock you

Summer is here, and the sun isn’t playing fair. Millions of people rush to the stores for the latest “high-end” sunscreens, thinking expensive bottles are the key to safe, glowing skin. But what if staying fully protected from harmful UV rays didn’t have to drain your wallet?

A new analysis by researchers at UC San Francisco (UCSF) reveals a shocking truth: you can protect your skin for as little as $40 a year, or spend over $1,400, depending on how much sunscreen you use, how often, and how much of your body you cover. The study, published in JAMA Dermatology, looked at sunscreen prices in the United States, but similar price variations exist in every country — meaning your local options could be far cheaper or much more expensive than you think.

Dr. Maria L. Wei, MD, PhD, a UCSF professor of dermatology and skin cancer specialist, explains:

“Less expensive sunscreen with the same SPF and ingredients is just as effective as pricier brands. Combine it with smart habits like wearing hats, long sleeves, and sunglasses, and you get full protection without overspending.”

The analysis examined real-life scenarios:

  • A week at the beach in shorts could cost $6.57 to $115.12
  • In a bikini, costs could jump to $7.75 to $135.82
  • Year-round office work: $39.80 to $688.56
  • Outdoor jobs: $81.53 to $1,429.42

Researchers also noted that correct application matters. Covering your entire body requires roughly an ounce per use — about the size of a shot glass. Skipping layers, underapplying, or relying only on high-priced products could leave your skin dangerously exposed.

Dr. Wei adds, “Encouraging affordable sunscreen use and preventive habits ensures everyone can stay protected — not just those who can afford luxury brands.”

Pro tip: Check local sunscreen prices in your country. The same SPF 50 lotion may cost a fraction of what you see in international brands — but offer equal protection if applied correctly.

Whether you’re at the beach, running errands, or working outdoors, the message is clear: sun safety doesn’t need to break the bank. Protect your skin wisely and save hundreds every year.
