Scientists call them superagers — adults aged 80 or above who retain memory skills comparable to those in their 50s. A new study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia sheds light on the unique brain features, resilience factors, and lifestyle habits that protect these individuals from typical age-related decline.
Unique brain features of 80-year-old superagers
One of the most striking discoveries is the presence of higher levels of von Economo neurons (spindle neurons) in superagers. These rare brain cells are tied to emotional intelligence, decision-making, and social connection.
Neuroimaging studies also show that superagers experience slower cortical thinning, a natural aging process linked to memory loss. Remarkably, the anterior cingulate cortex, which regulates emotion and social behavior, is thicker and denser in superagers compared not only to their age-matched peers but sometimes even to younger adults.
This structural resilience suggests that emotional health and brain resilience are strongly intertwined.
Resistance to Alzheimer’s-related changes
Researchers also found that superagers’ brains show fewer signs of Alzheimer’s-related changes. In particular, they had fewer neurofibrillary tangles — harmful protein buildups — in the rhinal cortex, a key memory region.
Blood tests revealed that superagers had lower levels of p-tau181, a biomarker strongly associated with neurodegeneration and dementia risk. These biological advantages may explain why many 80-year-olds classified as superagers maintain sharp memory despite their age.
The role of social connection and personality
Lifestyle and personality also play a role. Superagers in their 80s were more likely to be sociable, optimistic, and actively engaged in meaningful activities. They rated their relationships more positively and maintained stronger social networks compared to peers who showed faster decline.
Experts suggest that emotional resilience, social interaction, and purpose-driven living may provide an added layer of protection for brain health.
What this means for aging research
While genetics certainly influence superaging, researchers believe that studying 80-year-old superagers could unlock new strategies for healthy aging in the wider population.
