Solar system catches fire at Civil Hospital Karachi's College of Nursing
KARACHI: A fire erupted on Tuesday in the solar power system installed on the rooftop of the College of Nursing (Girls) at Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), sending shockwaves through the building and sparking immediate evacuation of students and staff.
According to hospital sources, the blaze filled the college building with dense smoke, causing panic among nursing students attending classes. those residing in the college hostel were also forced to evacuate as a safety precaution.
Dr Khalid Bukhari, Medical Superintendent of CHK, acted promptly to mitigate the risk. An emergency electrician team from the hospital reached the scene without delay and disconnected multiple power lines to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
“The fire was quickly brought under control thanks to the coordinated effort of our technical team,” said Dr Bukhari.
The affected solar system was part of the hospital’s broader renewable energy infrastructure. No casualties have been reported so far, but the building's ventilation was heavily impacted by the smoke.
Authorities have confirmed that a formal investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the solar panel fire, which may be linked to an electrical fault or short-circuit due to overheating or poor maintenance.
