LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, celebrated a major milestone in Pakistan's medical education sector by awarding postgraduate degrees to 1,449 healthcare professionals and recognizing 28 outstanding graduates with gold medals during its fourth convocation, reaffirming the university's role in producing highly trained specialists, researchers, educators and healthcare leaders for the country.
The convocation honoured graduates who successfully completed their postgraduate education between 2022 and 2026 across medicine, surgery, dentistry, nursing, public health and biomedical sciences.
Punjab Minister for Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Khawaja Salman Rafique conferred the degrees and gold medals, congratulating the graduates on their academic achievements while emphasizing that their qualifications carry a profound responsibility to serve humanity with integrity, compassion and professional excellence.
The ceremony commenced with the distribution of postgraduate degrees, followed by the professional oath administered to graduates by Professor Dr Nadia Naseem, the university's senior-most faculty member.
A total of 1,449 postgraduate qualifications were awarded, including:
- 572 Master of Surgery (MS)
- 311 Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
- 182 Postgraduate Medical Diplomas
- 176 Doctor of Medicine (MD)
- 62 Master of Science in Nursing (MS Nursing)
- 53 Master of Public Health (MPH)
- 40 Master in Health Professions Education (MHPE)
- 37 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- 16 Master of Dental Surgery (MDS)
The wide range of qualifications reflects UHS's expanding contribution to producing specialists across clinical medicine, dentistry, nursing, medical education, laboratory sciences and public health.
One of the highlights of the convocation was the recognition of 28 gold medalists who achieved exceptional academic performance in their respective disciplines.
Among those honoured were graduates from MPhil, MD, MS and MDS programmes representing specialties including: Chemical Pathology, Community Medicine, Forensic Science, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Immunology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Nursing, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Gastroenterology.
The prestigious awards recognized graduates who demonstrated exceptional academic excellence and professional commitment during their postgraduate training.
Punjab health minister highlights major healthcare reforms
Addressing the graduates, Khawaja Salman Rafique described the convocation as a celebration of perseverance, dedication and achievement.
He said the University of Health Sciences has evolved into one of Pakistan's leading public-sector health sciences universities, providing academic leadership to more than 200 affiliated medical, dental, nursing and allied health institutions.
According to the minister, UHS continues to strengthen medical education through curriculum reforms, faculty development, research, digital transformation and modern examination systems that prepare competent doctors, specialists, researchers and educators.
He also highlighted several healthcare initiatives introduced under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, including expanded programmes for:
- Paediatric cardiac surgery
- Kidney transplantation
- Liver transplantation
- Bone marrow transplantation
- Cochlear implants
- Corneal transplantation
- Cancer treatment
- Adult cardiac surgery
- Stroke management
- Free dialysis services across Punjab
He added that the provincial government is also establishing new children's hospitals, cardiology institutes, burn units and medical colleges while expanding nursing education to strengthen Pakistan's healthcare workforce.
Graduates urged to uphold ethics and lifelong learning
Speaking directly to the graduating healthcare professionals, Khawaja Salman Rafique reminded them that earning a postgraduate degree marks the beginning—not the end—of professional responsibility.
He urged the graduates to uphold honesty, ethical practice, compassion and patient-centred care throughout their careers while embracing lifelong learning and continuous professional development in an increasingly evolving healthcare landscape.
The minister also commended Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore, faculty members, supervisors, examiners and the university administration for maintaining high standards in medical education and research.

Presenting the university's annual report, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore highlighted significant progress achieved during the year in postgraduate education, medical research, curriculum modernization, digitalization and quality assurance.
He said UHS remains committed to competency-based medical education, modern postgraduate training and high-quality scientific research to produce skilled clinicians, researchers and educators capable of meeting Pakistan's future healthcare needs.
The vice chancellor noted that strengthening academic quality and innovation remains central to the university's mission of improving healthcare education and supporting better patient outcomes across the country.
