JSMU welcomes MBBS Class of 2026 with orientation ceremony
KARACHI: The Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) formally welcomed its newly admitted MBBS Class of 2026 with a two-day orientation ceremony, designed to introduce students and their parents to the university’s academic framework, institutional values, and comprehensive support systems as they embark on their medical careers.
The orientation program marked a significant milestone for the incoming batch, offering a structured overview of academic expectations, professional responsibilities, and ethical foundations essential for success in the medical profession.
Leadership highlights vision, responsibility
The ceremony opened with a welcome address by Vice Chancellor JSMU Professor Amjad Siraj Memon, who described orientation as one of the most memorable moments in a medical student’s life. He urged students to develop a strong commitment to preserving human life, pursue academic excellence, actively participate in student leadership, and dedicate their skills to serving the people of Pakistan. Professor Memon also briefed attendees on the scholarship opportunities available at JSMU, emphasizing the university’s commitment to inclusive education.
Academic structure, curriculum overview
Principal of Sindh Medical College-JSMU, Professor Dr. Ambreen Usmani, welcomed the new cohort and provided a detailed briefing on the university’s rules, attendance policies, and curriculum structure. She highlighted the importance of discipline, consistency, and professionalism throughout medical training.
Dean of the Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Farah Jawed, addressed students on the responsibility, dedication, and perseverance required to excel in the demanding field of healthcare education.
Oath-taking ceremony formally inducts students
One of the key highlights of the first day was the symbolic Oath-Taking Ceremony, presided over by Registrar JSMU Dr. Azam Khan. The ceremony formally inducted the MBBS Class of 2026 into the healthcare community, reinforcing JSMU’s core values of professionalism, compassion, and excellence.
Administrative briefings, departmental insights
Students received detailed academic and administrative briefings from key university officials. Controller of Examinations Dr. Fouzia Imtiaz explained examination procedures and promotion policies, while Director of Student Affairs Ms. Zohra Simeen outlined student facilities and addressed common concerns.
Heads of basic science departments—Professor Dr. Sadaf Hamid (Anatomy), Professor Dr. Asif Memon (Physiology), and Professor Dr. Saima (Biochemistry)—introduced their respective disciplines, underscoring their foundational role in medical education.
Parental engagement, professional development focus
Parents were hosted in a separate lecture hall, allowing them to participate meaningfully in this important milestone of their children’s academic journey.
Dr. Amna Anzar, In-charge of the Professional Development Centre, introduced students to the PDC and undergraduate skills lab. Dr. Hassan Shahid, Head of Community Dentistry, conducted a comprehensive session on scholarship awareness and the Career Counseling Committee.
Ethics, policy, and student welfare
Sessions on professional conduct and institutional policy were led by Head of Community Medicine Dr. Tafazzul Zaidi and Director Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) Dr. Abdul Wahid Usmani, who explained key policies, including the harassment policy and Higher Education Commission (HEC) guidelines.
Additional Director of Communications Ms. Asfiya Aziz briefed students on the Media and Communication Policy, reaffirming JSMU’s status as a “safe zone” and its commitment to maintaining high institutional standards.
The program also featured an introduction to Family Medicine by Dr. Kiran Abdul Sattar, who addressed essential student health protocols.
