Pakistan’s 30th polio case of 2025 reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
ISLAMABAD: A new poliovirus case has been detected in Torghar district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, raising the total number of polio cases in Pakistan in 2025 to 30, according to the National Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
The EOC said the latest case was confirmed through laboratory testing as part of ongoing national surveillance and response activities. The newly affected child has been placed under medical care, while health authorities have intensified vaccination efforts in the surrounding areas to prevent further transmission.
In an official statement, the National EOC urged parents and caregivers across Pakistan to ensure that every child receives oral polio vaccine (OPV) drops during each vaccination campaign and completes their routine immunization schedule.
“Eradicating polio is a shared national responsibility. Every parent, community, and institution must play its part to protect children from lifelong disability,” the EOC emphasized.
Sustained vaccination drives remain critical
Health teams supported by WHO, UNICEF, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) continue extensive door-to-door immunization campaigns in high-risk districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan. Regular environmental surveillance and emergency response operations are underway to trace the virus and interrupt its spread.
According to health officials, most cases this year have been detected in southern KP, where population mobility, security challenges, and vaccine refusals continue to hinder eradication efforts.
Polio-free Pakistan remains the goal
Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only two countries in the world where the wild poliovirus is still endemic. National authorities reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a polio-free Pakistan, stressing that community engagement and consistent vaccination coverage are key to ending transmission once and for all.
Parents were once again reminded that every missed child increases the risk of the virus resurfacing, making nationwide cooperation essential for success.
