ISLAMABAD:  In a groundbreaking advancement for cancer care in Pakistan, a medical team at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad has performed the country’s first-ever liver transplant to treat metastatic colorectal cancer — marking a historic milestone in local oncology and transplant surgery.

The landmark procedure involved a woman from Karachi, who was diagnosed with advanced-stage colorectal cancer that had spread to her liver. Her liver had become non-functional due to widespread metastasis. In a complex and life-saving surgery, doctors completely removed the cancer-ravaged liver and replaced it with a portion of her husband's healthy liver, successfully performing a living-donor liver transplant.

According to hospital sources and medical experts involved in the case, the left lobe of the husband’s liver was transplanted after thorough compatibility screening and surgical preparation. Post-surgery, the patient has recovered well, is cancer-free, and is reported to be living a healthy, normal life.

“This is a major breakthrough in Pakistan’s fight against advanced-stage cancers,” stated an expert from Shifa’s surgical team. “Liver metastasis due to colon cancer has often been considered terminal. But with the right expertise and multidisciplinary coordination, a curative path is now possible.”

Why this procedure matters:

  • Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths globally.
  • When it spreads to the liver, it is often regarded as incurable.
  • This surgery brings new hope for patients with liver metastasis in Pakistan and the broader South Asian region.

Medical professionals and transplant experts have hailed this operation as a symbol of progress and precision, combining oncology, hepatobiliary surgery, transplant medicine, and compassionate care.

The success of this transplant positions Pakistan among countries capable of offering advanced surgical solutions for complex cancer cases and opens the door to more life-saving procedures for metastatic cancers in the near future.
