Surge in pneumonia cases among children in Lahore raises alarms
LAHORE: Lahore is facing a concerning spike in pneumonia cases among children, with over 3,000 cases reported in just the past week. Health authorities are linking the rise to the ongoing dry weather conditions and the spread of viral infections, worsening the situation.
According to official data, Children’s Hospital Lahore has recorded around 920 pneumonia cases in just one week. Services Hospital reported more than 700 cases, and Mayo Hospital registered over 610 cases in their pediatric wards. Jinnah Hospital also confirmed 450 cases of pneumonia. Additionally, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and General Hospital have been diagnosing a significant number of pediatric pneumonia cases, further highlighting the widespread impact of the illness.
Pneumonia: A deadly threat to young children
Pneumonia, though commonly seen in children, can be a life-threatening condition if not addressed promptly. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes pneumonia as one of the leading causes of child mortality globally. In fact, it accounts for around 14% of child deaths every year.
Children under five years of age are particularly vulnerable to severe pneumonia, which can affect their overall health for weeks or even months. Experts emphasize that early diagnosis and medical attention are essential to preventing complications, especially in areas experiencing poor air quality or viral outbreaks.
The role of preventive care in reducing pneumonia risk
Medical professionals urge parents to be aware of the symptoms of pneumonia and to seek immediate care if their child shows signs of respiratory distress. Pneumonia in children is caused by various factors, including bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, which are highly contagious. The spread is rapid, especially among children in communal settings like schools and daycare centers.
To combat this, experts recommend good hygiene practices, such as frequent hand washing, and proper nutrition to strengthen the immune system. In addition, timely vaccination and seeking medical advice at the first sign of symptoms can reduce the risk of severe complications.
Health experts call for better preparedness
Dr. Muhammad Asghar, a leading pediatrician in Lahore, stated:
“The increase in pneumonia cases is a major health concern, and we must act swiftly to protect our children. The combination of dry weather and widespread viral infections makes this an especially critical time for pneumonia prevention.”
Dr. Asghar further emphasized that while pneumonia is treatable, the high number of cases in hospitals calls for heightened public awareness, improved hygiene practices, and better access to medical care for affected children.

Health professionals advise parents to:
- Monitor children's health regularly and seek medical attention if pneumonia symptoms, such as cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, appear.
- Ensure children receive all recommended vaccinations, including the pneumococcal vaccine.
- Maintain good air quality at home and encourage regular hand washing to reduce the spread of infectious agents.
As pneumonia remains one of the most serious health threats to children, taking preventive measures and responding early to symptoms can save lives.
