Minister vows to make Sindh a polio-free province

KARACHI - Sindh Minister for Health Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar said here that the next phase of the ongoing anti-polio campaign would be conducted in five towns of Karachi from Oct 28 to 31.

The towns to be covered during the campaign include Gulberg, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gadap, he added. 

Apprising about the first phase of anti-polio drive that ended on Oct 15, the minister said that as many as 4,97,3423 children were administered polio drops in 16 towns of Karachi and 14 districts of the province.

Giving break-up of number of children administered polio drops during the recently concluded campaign, he said that they included 3,35,390 in Dadu; 334,126 in Ghotki; 3,16,144 in Hyderabad; 2,20,075 in Jacobabad; 62,715 in Jamshoro; 2,75,866 in Kambar; 2,23,253 in Kashmore; 4,32,205 in Khairpur; 3,08,332 in Larkana; 2,87,977 in Naushero Feroz; 3,79,467 in Sanghar; 3,31,153 in Shaheed Benazirabad; 2,48,371 in Shikarpur and 2,81,142 in Sukkur.
He said that though the number of refusal cases was 7,465, efforts were under way to bring these cases to zero in consultation with all stakeholders and with the assistance of civil society.

At the outset, the minister reiterated that the government is committed to make Sindh a polio-free province and all stakeholders are making sincere efforts to eradicate the crippling disease from the province.
