KARACHI: In a heartwarming gesture of recognition and solidarity, senior journalist Akhtar Shaheen Rind hosted a special Iftar at the Karachi Press Club to honor Pakistan’s health reporters—those unsung heroes reporting from hospitals, labs, clinics, and conflict zones across the country.
The event was more than a gathering; it was a call for unity and professional empowerment. Health reporters from television channels, newspapers, and digital platforms came together to discuss the challenges they face on the frontline of medical journalism, from ethical reporting to verifying complex health data under tight deadlines.
Sardar Liaquat Kashmiri, Secretary General of the Karachi Union of Journalists, joined the gathering, pledging his full support for the medical journalism community and emphasizing the importance of collaboration for professional growth.
At the occasion, an ad hoc committee of the Health Reporters Association was announced to strengthen organizational efforts and represent the interests of health journalists nationwide. Akhtar Shaheen Rind was appointed as Convener, with Imran Pirzada as Deputy Convener. Other members include Ibrahim Rind, Abid Khan, Bilal Tahir, Safdar Butt, Yasir Saleem, Pawan Kumar, Anum Mashkoor, Imdad Soomro, Nasrullah Jamali, Raja Irshad Asadi, Wasim Hashmi, Rizwan Jalali, and Maria Ismail Memon.

The committee’s mandate is clear: enhance collaboration, support professional capacity, and amplify the voice of health reporters in Pakistan. The membership drive will continue until March 25, followed by elections to establish the first official cabinet of the Health Reporters Association.
This Iftar and the committee formation represent a historic moment for health journalism in Pakistan—a community often overlooked yet vital in keeping the public informed about health policies, outbreaks, and medical advancements. The event signaled a renewed commitment to journalist unity, accountability, and public service, setting the stage for a more organized, effective, and respected health reporting sector.
