KARACHI: As millions of Pakistanis prepare for Ramadan, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Rehan Omar, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the National Medical Center and Life Healthcare Clinics, has issued crucial advice on fasting safely while maintaining health. Speaking at a lecture titled “Medication and Lifestyle Adjustments During Ramadan: The Month of Unlimited Blessings” at the L.E.J. National Science Information Center, University of Karachi (UoK), he urged citizens to prioritize pre-Ramadan medical assessments and structured lifestyle changes.
Prof. Rehan emphasized that a well-balanced, fiber-rich, low-salt, and low-glycemic diet is key during fasting. Exercise should ideally be done after iftar to maintain strength and cardiovascular health without risking dehydration. He warned against excessive carbohydrate and fat intake at sehri and iftar, highlighting the importance of nutritional counseling for weight management.

Addressing Pakistan’s health challenges, Prof. Omar noted the country faces the world’s highest diabetes prevalence, and rising cardiovascular disease rates are causing an increasing number of deaths. Ramadan offers an opportunity to tackle obesity, improve mental wellness, and adopt lasting healthy habits.
He outlined who should avoid fasting without medical supervision, including patients with poorly controlled hypertension, recent heart attacks, severe valvular disease, or high-risk arrhythmias. Conversely, patients with kidney disease may fast under careful medical monitoring. He also referenced guidelines from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the Diabetes and Ramadan (DAR) International Alliance for safe fasting in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Prof. Omar concluded that while some weight loss occurs during Ramadan, it is often temporary. Consistent lifestyle changes are necessary to prevent post-Ramadan weight gain, while active participation in the holy month can reduce stress, anxiety, and improve cognitive function.
With Ramadan approaching, taking proactive steps now could safeguard your heart, blood sugar, and overall well-being.
