KARACHI: The alleged suicide of a senior government doctor in Sindh has triggered outrage, grief, and urgent questions about workplace harassment and mental health within Pakistan’s healthcare system.
Dr. Abdul Karim Sheikh, a Chief Medical Officer (BPS-19) posted at Civil Hospital Mithi in District Tharparkar, was found dead in his official hospital residence in what police say appears to be suicide.
According to local authorities, Dr. Sheikh allegedly hanged himself inside his hospital quarters after writing a letter addressed to the Inspector General (IG) Sindh Police, in which he reportedly accused certain hospital officials and staff members of harassment and humiliation.
The incident has sparked widespread concern across the medical community, with many doctors and healthcare workers calling the tragedy a wake-up call about toxic work environments and psychological pressures faced by medical professionals.
Allegations of harassment before the tragedy
Police sources say the incident occurred after Dr. Sheikh had been accused by hospital staff of alleged sexual misconduct involving a female nurse.
In his letter to the IG Sindh, however, the doctor reportedly strongly rejected the accusations and claimed he was being subjected to humiliation and harassment by members of the hospital administration.
The letter allegedly named several officials and staff members, including Dr. Harish Kumar Jagani, among others.
According to reports, before his death Dr. Sheikh had even informed a local journalist about his intention to take his own life.
Despite the information reaching hospital authorities, no preventive intervention was reportedly taken, raising troubling questions about whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
Police response and investigation
Following the incident, DSP Mithi Majid Qaim Khani and SHO Mithi police reached the scene.
The doctor’s body was recovered and shifted to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Authorities have begun reviewing the circumstances surrounding the case, including the contents of the suicide note and the allegations made within it.
Sindh Health Department suspends four hospital employees
In the latest development, the Government of Sindh Health Department has suspended four officials of Civil Hospital Mithi with immediate effect pending disciplinary proceedings.
According to an official order issued by the department, the suspended employees include:
• Manthar Bheel — Staff Nurse (BPS-16)
• Sardar Bheel — Staff Nurse (BPS-16)
• Barkat Ali Hingoro — Store Keeper (BPS-06)
• Rajab — Ward Boy (BPS-04)
The order states that the suspensions have been carried out under E&D Rules 1973, and the officials will continue to draw salary and allowances as permitted under the rules while disciplinary proceedings are conducted.
However, officials mentioned in Dr. Sheikh’s alleged suicide letter have not yet been suspended, according to the latest information available.
Inquiry committee formed to investigate the case
In a separate notification issued by the Sindh Health Department, the government has also constituted a fact-finding inquiry committee to determine the circumstances surrounding Dr. Sheikh’s death.
The inquiry committee will be headed by:
• Director General Health Services Hyderabad — Convener
• Additional Secretary Technical, Health Department Karachi — Member
• Representative of Deputy Commissioner Tharparkar — Member
According to the notification, the committee has been tasked to:
• Determine the circumstances and cause of death of Dr. Abdul Karim Sheikh
• Investigate the role of officers and officials mentioned in the suicide note
• Submit recommendations for administrative or legal action
The committee has been directed to submit its report within seven days of the issuance of the notification.
