Why late-evening eating may disrupt blood sugar control, new twin study reveals
Eating late in the evening may do more than disturb sleep patterns — it could also make it harder for the body to regulate blood sugar, even in healthy individuals, according to new findings from a German twin study.
The study, conducted by researchers at the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke (DIfE), explored how meal timing interacts with our circadian rhythms and impacts glucose metabolism. The results, published in eBioMedicine, offer a deeper understanding of why insulin sensitivity may drop later in the day.
The circadian clock and metabolism
Our body runs on an internal 24-hour clock known as the circadian system, which governs sleep, hormone levels, metabolism, and more. Centralized in the brain and echoed in peripheral organs like the liver and pancreas, these biological clocks respond to light and food intake.

Eating at times that are misaligned with this internal rhythm — for example, close to bedtime — can throw off metabolic functions, including the ability to efficiently process glucose.
Insights from the NUGAT twin study
To explore this phenomenon, researchers used data from the NUGAT study (2009–2010) involving 92 twins (both identical and fraternal). Participants provided five-day food diaries detailing meal timing and content. They also underwent glucose tolerance tests and chronotype assessments.

The analysis revealed a key trend: individuals who ate their final meal closer to bedtime experienced lower insulin sensitivity in the evening. This suggests that late-evening eating may impair the body’s natural glucose processing mechanisms.
Individual rhythms and meal timing
The study also considered participants' chronotypes — whether they are naturally early risers or night owls — by calculating the midpoint of their sleep. This helped align meal timing with each person’s biological rhythm, adding a personalized dimension to the findings.
Expert opinion: should healthy people worry?
Destini Moody, RD, CSSD, LD, a registered dietitian at Top Nutrition Coaching, who was not involved in the study, offered balanced insight. She noted that while meal timing can influence blood sugar control in people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome, healthy individuals with normal pancreatic function may not need to worry as much.
"In general, blood sugar variations are a natural part of digestion. Unless someone is diabetic or pre-diabetic, they should focus more on diet quality — such as eating whole grains, lean proteins, and fiber — than strictly on timing," Moody said.
She emphasized that refined carbs and added sugars spike blood sugar levels more sharply than late-evening meals alone. Eating high-fiber foods and maintaining a balanced diet are key to metabolic health.

This twin study underscores that late-evening eating could hinder glucose regulation, particularly by reducing insulin sensitivity later in the day. While healthy individuals may not need to overhaul their routines, aligning meal timing with the body’s natural rhythms could offer metabolic advantages.
For those at risk of type 2 diabetes or with a family history of insulin resistance, being mindful of when they eat may be just as important as what they eat.
