ISLAMABAD: In a decisive move to regulate tuition fees in private medical and dental colleges, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has initiated steps to establish a standardized fee structure. The initiative aims to curb excessive fee hikes and enhance transparency, addressing the growing financial burden on students and parents. The second subcommittee meeting, held recently, focused on ensuring affordability while maintaining educational quality.
Addressing rising tuition costs in private colleges
Private medical and dental college tuition fees have soared in recent years, making medical education increasingly inaccessible. PMDC’s latest discussions centered on striking a balance between affordability and institutional sustainability. ✔ Mandatory Fee Disclosure: Colleges must publicly display their tuition and associated charges on their official websites and in admission brochures to eliminate hidden costs.
✔ Oversight & Compliance: PMDC plans to establish a regulatory body responsible for monitoring fee structures and penalizing institutions that engage in overcharging practices.
✔ Student Support Initiatives: The council is also advocating for scholarships, installment-based payment options, and financial aid programs to support students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Challenges & industry pushback
The proposal has faced resistance from private medical and dental colleges, some of which argue that a standardized fee structure may impact their operational sustainability. However, PMDC remains firm on implementing reforms that benefit students and ensure educational fairness.
PMDC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj reaffirmed the council’s commitment to regulating fees while allowing institutions to sustain high-quality education. “Our goal is to establish a maximum fee cap that protects students from exploitation while ensuring that institutions remain financially viable,” he stated.
