Diabetic patients should fast only after consulting physicians to avoid medical complications: Experts
KARACHI: As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, medical and religious experts are advising diabetic patients to consult with their physicians before deciding to fast. The National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE) held a Diabetes and Ramadan Patient Awareness Program at the Ojha Campus of Dow University of Health Sciences to provide crucial guidance on the health risks associated with fasting for those living with diabetes.
The importance of medical advice for diabetic patients
During the event, experts emphasized that fasting without proper medical advice could lead to serious health complications, including hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). According to Dr. Musarrat Riaz, Director of NIDE, patients with diabetes need scientific and practical guidance to help them make safe and informed decisions regarding fasting. The session also sought to dispel misconceptions surrounding diabetes and fasting, underscoring the importance of collaboration between physicians, patients, and religious scholars.
When is fasting not safe for diabetic patients?
Dr. Fareeduddin, a diabetes specialist, highlighted that structured Ramadan dietary plans are designed to determine whether fasting is safe for diabetic patients. People with extremely high or low blood glucose levels or those with a history of heart disease are generally advised against fasting. Dr. Fareeduddin explained that fasting in these conditions can exacerbate health problems and lead to further medical complications.
Religious exemptions for diabetic patients
Religious scholar Mufti Farukh Ahmed reassured patients that Islam grants exemptions to those whose health could be seriously harmed by fasting. He explained that if diabetes puts a person’s life at risk due to fluctuating blood sugar levels, they are religiously permitted not to fast. The Quran acknowledges exemptions for those suffering from illness, emphasizing compassion and understanding for patients facing health challenges.
Managing diabetes during Ramadan: Tips from experts
The Dietitian Ms. Tehmina Rashid discussed the role of balanced nutrition during Ramadan, urging patients not to skip suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and to consume fiber-rich foods like lentils, vegetables, and yogurt for better glycemic control. This advice aims to ensure that diabetic patients maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the fasting period.
Additionally, experts provided guidance on adjusting medication and insulin dosages during fasting hours and emphasized the importance of regular blood glucose monitoring.
The role of community support and awareness
The awareness program emphasized that diabetic patients should not feel guilty for opting out of fasting if their health could be at risk. The collective effort of physicians, religious scholars, and family members plays a crucial role in ensuring that diabetic patients can safely navigate the fasting period during Ramadan. Dr. Musarrat Riaz concluded by urging the community to raise awareness about the potential health risks of fasting without proper consultation.
At the conclusion of the event, free medical check-ups, diagnostic tests, and consultations related to diabetes were provided to patients, ensuring they received personalized care.
