Pakistan, Japan partner to upgrade pediatric healthcare facilities in Southern Punjab
ISLAMABAD: In a significant move to improve child healthcare in southern Punjab, Pakistan and Japan have signed a grant agreement aimed at enhancing the pediatric healthcare infrastructure in the region. The Japanese government will provide financial assistance amounting to ¥2.91 billion (approximately USD 18.62 million) to support the upgrade of the Children's Hospital and Institute of Child Health (ICH) in Multan.
Upgrading the Children’s Hospital in Multan
The Children's Hospital and Institute of Child Health (ICH) in Multan, the largest tertiary care children’s hospital in southern Punjab, will be the primary beneficiary of this grant. The funding will be used to improve the hospital’s medical facilities, ensuring more effective and high-quality services for children in the region.
The hospital will receive state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructure, which will expand its capacity and enhance its ability to provide comprehensive care to young patients. With these improvements, ICH Multan will be better equipped to tackle pediatric health challenges and offer specialized care to children from underserved communities.
Strengthening bilateral relations
The Exchange of Notes for this significant project was signed by Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim on behalf of Pakistan, and Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan H.E. Akamatsu Shuichi on behalf of Japan. Both officials highlighted the importance of the collaboration, which represents a major step towards further strengthening the friendly relations and bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
Secretary Muhammad Humair Karim expressed his appreciation for Japan's valuable support, noting that Pakistan is committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the project. He emphasized that the collaboration would significantly improve healthcare access for vulnerable children in southern Punjab.
In response, Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi reaffirmed Japan's dedication to continued cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in the health sector. He stressed that such partnerships were essential for addressing healthcare needs and deepening bilateral ties.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the development of child healthcare in Pakistan. With this support, southern Punjab will see substantial improvements in pediatric healthcare infrastructure, making it easier for children in the region to access better medical care.
