Pakistan moves to establish Pak–US healthcare corridor at Medical Tourism Summit 2026
LAHORE: For decades, Pakistan’s healthcare narrative has been shaped by “brain drain,” as thousands of doctors and nurses leave the country each year in search of better pay and working conditions abroad. Now, a new idea is gaining traction: turning that outward flow into inward opportunity by inviting patients from overseas to seek treatment in Pakistan. With treatment costs in Western countries rising sharply and waiting lists stretching for months, Pakistan’s comparatively affordable and increasingly modern healthcare system is being reimagined as a destination rather than a departure point.
Pakistan’s efforts to formalize medical tourism are increasingly being shaped around the Homeward Health Initiative, a cross-border healthcare framework designed to connect overseas Pakistanis with trusted, internationally compliant medical services in their home country. The initiative envisions a structured referral, treatment, and follow-up system between Pakistan and the United States, with a focus on affordability, reduced waiting times, and standardized quality of care. Under this model, patients are expected to access treatments in Pakistan at 70 to 85 percent lower cost than in Western countries, without compromising on clinical standards. Within this broader push to operationalize the initiative, the Medical Tourism Summit 2026 was held at King Edward Medical University (KEMU), Lahore, in collaboration with NRP (Non-Resident Pakistanis) Washington DC and the National Health Chambers USA, to advance practical steps toward establishing a formal healthcare corridor between the two countries.
The Chief Guest at the ceremony was Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University, Professor Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz. The event was attended by Consul General of the United States Mr. Stetson Sanders and former Federal Minister of Health Dr. Saeed Elahi as Guests of Honour. The summit was hosted by Dr. Saeed Elahi, Nasir Raufi, Khalid Sattar, and Dr. Inge Urbancic, while Dr. Zahid Pervaiz served as Chief Organizer and Dr. Yadullah as Organizer.
From an international perspective, Dr. Inge Urbancic of the National Health Chambers USA (NHC-USA) stressed that international standards, transparency, and patient trust are the pillars of successful medical tourism. She noted that Pakistan already possesses globally competitive medical expertise, which can be more effectively showcased through structured international collaboration and clear regulatory frameworks.
The summit featured detailed sessions on a wide range of specialties, including cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurology, general surgery, dental implants, cosmetic surgery, IVF, eye surgery (LASIK), orthopedic and joint care, and preventive health checkups. Speakers pointed out that with healthcare costs soaring in the United States and an expected 9.6 percent medical inflation rate, Pakistan is emerging as a strong alternative for patients seeking affordable yet high-quality medical services.

Participants included heads of public and private medical colleges, representatives of the Pakistan Medical Association, chambers of commerce, medical students, technical partners, media representatives, social leaders, and philanthropic personalities. The diverse participation reflected growing interest in positioning healthcare not only as a public service but also as a strategic economic sector.
At the conclusion of the summit, participants reaffirmed their commitment to working under a unified strategy to project Pakistan as a safe, high-quality, and reliable global hub for medical tourism. As Pakistan grapples with workforce migration and rising healthcare costs worldwide, the shift from “brain drain” to “patient gain” signals an attempt to redefine the country’s healthcare future—one where its hospitals attract international patients rather than lose local talent.
