World Diabetes Day - Prof Shera calls for effective diabetes’ prevention policy

Karachi: Sir Syed Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE) of Sir Syed College of Medical Sciences observed World Diabetes Day by organizing an awareness seminar at its city campus.

Speaking on the occasion, prominent diabetologist Prof  Samad Shera said that World Diabetes Day is observed on Nov 14 every year around the world, including Pakistan, to raise awareness among people about diabetes. World Diabetes Day is a call to all those who are responsible for diabetes care and can contribute to control it.

He urged the government to implement and strengthen policies for the prevention and control of diabetes and its complications.

Prof  M. Zaman Shaikh said that the World Diabetes Day 2015 calls on all those responsible for diabetes care to take control of diabetes. For the general public and people at high risk of diabetes, the campaign raises awareness of the warning signs of diabetes and promotes action to encourage early diagnosis, he added.

Prof Abdul Basit said that there are seven (07) million diabetic patients and seven (07) million pre-diabetes patients in Pakistan. Diabetic population of  varied age groups will surge in the next 20 years, he opined.

Later, a scientific session of the seminar was held at which Dr Shabeen Naz talked about “Dilemma in Screening and Diagnosis of GDM”,  Prof Samad Shera spoke on the topic of “Prevention & Management of Diabetes Mellitus – An overview”, Prof Abdul Basit spoke about “Epidemic of Diabesity”, Prof Zaman Shaikh gave a talk on “Lifestyle Modification & Diabetes”, while the topic of Yogi Wajahat’s speech was “Yoga and Diabetes”.
