Sindh Government Children Hospital faces roof leakage and plaster falling hazards
KARACHI: The Sindh Government Children Hospital is facing a growing safety risk as roof leakage and falling plaster have become a routine problem during the rainy season. The hospital, which treats more than 1,000 children daily, is housed in an old building where the infrastructure is deteriorating, putting patients, attendants, and staff at risk.
Health professionals and parents have raised alarm over the situation, warning that chunks of falling plaster could cause serious injuries. The water seepage and damp ceilings also pose a hygiene challenge in wards, increasing the risk of infections for already vulnerable children.
Surveys done, but repairs still pending
According to hospital sources, the Works and Services Department has conducted multiple surveys of the hospital building to assess the structural damage. However, despite repeated inspections and recommendations, repair and renovation work has yet to begin.
Experts stress that urgent action is needed to ensure patient safety and prevent any untoward incidents. “This is not just a matter of infrastructure — it’s a matter of children’s lives and public health,” said a senior pediatrician requesting anonymity.
Call for immediate action
Civil society groups and healthcare activists have called on the Sindh government to prioritize the hospital’s repair work before further damage occurs. With monsoon rains still expected, timely intervention could avert potential accidents and create a safer environment for children.
