KARACHI: The city is witnessing a sharp increase in measles cases, highlighting serious shortcomings in Pakistan’s immunization program and a lack of awareness among parents regarding their children's fundamental health needs. The outbreak is rapidly spreading across major hospitals in Karachi, raising urgent concerns about disease control measures.
Dr. Irfan, Ward In-Charge at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital, confirmed that 17 patients are currently undergoing treatment for measles, with eight infants under the age of one affected. Similarly, officials at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) report that over six children are arriving in emergency care daily due to measles complications.

Civil Hospital Karachi is admitting four to six new measles cases daily, with 12 patients currently receiving treatment.
Abbasi Shaheed Hospital has recorded six cases so far.
Qatar Hospital Orangi has also dealt with 12 confirmed cases this year.

Medical experts warn that measles is a highly contagious viral disease primarily affecting children, including those who have received vaccinations but still contract the infection. Initial symptoms include fever, cough, cold, nausea, and severe itching. If left untreated, measles can significantly weaken the immune system and, in severe cases, become fatal.
