Open manholes in Sindh hospitals spark serious public safety concerns
KARACHI: Open manholes with missing covers have been reported across multiple government hospitals in Sindh, raising serious concerns about public safety and hospital infrastructure standards. The hazardous conditions were identified at major facilities including Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and Sindh Government General Hospital, Korangi-5, where missing manhole covers pose immediate risks to patients, healthcare workers, ambulances, and visitors.
Doctors from JPMC reached out to media reporters after visuals of these dangerous spots surfaced, confirming the presence of several open manholes both inside and around the hospital premises. According to medical staff, the issue has persisted for weeks despite repeated internal complaints.
Healthcare professionals warned that hospital administration appears unresponsive, increasing the likelihood of a serious accident if the problem remains unaddressed. They stressed that open manholes within hospital boundaries are particularly dangerous, as patients with limited mobility, emergency responders, and children are at greater risk of falling into them.
Doctors have urgently appealed to the relevant authorities, including the hospital administration and municipal bodies, to secure and cover all open manholes immediately to prevent potential injuries or fatalities.
The situation highlights broader concerns about hospital maintenance, infrastructure safety, and the need for coordinated oversight to ensure hazard-free environments in public healthcare facilities across Sindh.
