KARACHI: In a significant step toward strengthening maternal and women's healthcare services in Sindh, modern modular operating theatres for gynecology and obstetrics have been inaugurated at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), one of Pakistan’s largest public-sector tertiary care hospitals.
The newly established operating theatre complex was formally inaugurated by Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, who said the facility would help improve surgical care, emergency response, and treatment outcomes for women seeking specialized healthcare services at the hospital.
Equipped with modern medical technology and advanced surgical infrastructure, the modular operating theatre block has been designed to support high-quality gynecological and obstetric procedures while reducing treatment delays and improving patient safety.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr Pechuho said that operation theatre and emergency services at the new facility had already become operational, enabling patients to receive timely medical attention and improved clinical care.
Major Upgrade for Women's Healthcare
The launch of the new operating theatre block is part of broader efforts by the Sindh government to modernize public healthcare facilities and enhance access to specialized treatment services.
Dr Pechuho emphasized that healthcare infrastructure at JPMC continues to be upgraded with advanced equipment and modern technologies aimed at improving patient outcomes and bringing public-sector healthcare services closer to international standards.
She noted that the government remains committed to expanding treatment facilities for patients suffering from various medical conditions while strengthening specialized healthcare departments across the hospital.
Specialized NICU planned for newborns
As part of ongoing healthcare expansion plans, the health minister announced the establishment of a dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for newborn babies at JPMC.
The proposed NICU is expected to enhance neonatal care services, provide specialized treatment for critically ill and premature infants, and strengthen maternal and child healthcare support within the hospital.
Healthcare experts consider neonatal intensive care facilities critical for reducing newborn mortality rates and improving survival outcomes among high-risk infants.
Recruitment drive to address staff shortages
Addressing workforce challenges in the public health sector, Dr Pechuho said the Sindh government has accelerated the recruitment of healthcare professionals to overcome staffing shortages in hospitals.
According to the minister, several appointments have already been made, while additional recruitment is underway to ensure adequate medical, nursing, and technical staff are available to meet growing patient demands.
Expansion of healthcare facilities
The minister also revealed that the number of beds at JPMC has been increased as part of a wider healthcare expansion strategy.
She said the Sindh government is working to upgrade healthcare infrastructure, improve emergency care services, and expand treatment capacity across multiple specialties to meet the healthcare needs of Karachi’s rapidly growing population.
The inauguration of the modular gynecology and obstetrics operating theatres marks another milestone in JPMC’s ongoing modernization efforts and reflects broader initiatives aimed at strengthening maternal health, neonatal care, emergency services, and public healthcare delivery in Sindh.
