Participants in the study, who consumed two servings of salmon per week over two five-week periods, witnessed significant enhancements in their cardiometabolic health indicators.

The Mediterranean diet, celebrated for its emphasis on wholesome, plant-based foods coupled with moderate consumption of fish and poultry, has long been associated with a myriad of health benefits. By embracing this dietary approach and incorporating salmon into their meals, participants experienced reductions in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B—crucial factors in assessing heart disease risk.

The study, conducted as a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled feeding trial involving 41 participants, employed advanced chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to scrutinize blood plasma samples.

Through the identification of specific compounds unique to salmon and their associated metabolites, researchers elucidated the mechanisms underlying salmon's cardiometabolic benefits.
