KARACHI: Pakistani researchers have taken a significant step in homegrown medical technology innovation after the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Pakistan accepted the patent application for an artificial intelligence-powered wearable device designed to detect impending epileptic seizures and automatically administer medication.
The invention, titled "An Intelligent Seizure Detection and Drug Administration Device," has been developed by a multidisciplinary team led by neuroscientist Prof. Dr. Muhammad Liaquat Raza and Dr. Sajjad Zaidi, with AI and machine learning development led by engineer Muhammad Khizar Abbas.
While the patent acceptance represents an important milestone in protecting the intellectual property behind the innovation, the researchers emphasize that the technology is currently a patented prototype and would require further scientific validation, clinical testing and regulatory approvals before it could become available for routine patient care.
Aiming to address one of epilepsy's biggest challenges
Epilepsy affects an estimated 60 million people worldwide, according to global health estimates, with nearly 80% of patients living in low- and middle-income countries.
One of the greatest challenges faced by people living with epilepsy is the unpredictability of seizures, which can result in falls, injuries, accidents and, in some cases, life-threatening complications.

According to the team, the AI model underwent repeated cycles of data collection, signal processing, feature engineering, machine learning training and performance validation to distinguish normal brain activity from seizure-related electrical patterns with greater accuracy.
