KARACHI: Pakistan has confirmed its first case of Naegleria fowleri infection in 2026, with a 43-year-old man receiving intensive care at a major Karachi hospital as health authorities urge the public to take preventive measures against the rare but almost always fatal disease.
The patient, identified as Muhammad Amjad, is currently being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he remains on a ventilator, according to health officials.
The confirmation has once again drawn attention to Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoeba, which, although extremely rare, causes one of the deadliest infections affecting the human brain.

What is Naegleria fowleri?

Despite its popular nickname, the organism does not literally "eat" the brain. Instead, it destroys brain tissue after entering the body through the nose and traveling to the brain, leading to severe inflammation and rapid neurological deterioration.
The disease is considered one of the most lethal infectious illnesses because survival remains exceptionally rare.
How does the infection occur?
Health experts emphasize that Naegleria fowleri infection does not occur by drinking contaminated water.
Instead, infection happens when contaminated water is forcefully inhaled through the nose, allowing the amoeba to reach the brain through the olfactory nerve.

They also recommend avoiding the use of untreated water for nasal rinsing or any activity that could force water into the nose.

Although the disease attracts widespread attention because of its exceptionally high fatality rate, experts stress that Naegleria fowleri infections remain extremely rare.
