KARACHI: The flow of patients being referred from Indus Hospital to other government hospitals continues, as many patients are redirected daily to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and Civil Hospital Karachi due to the unavailability of beds.
Patients reportedly wait for hours in the emergency department at Indus Hospital before being informed that no beds are available and are subsequently referred to public sector hospitals for further treatment.
Patients waiting hours before being redirected
According to reports, patients arriving at Indus Hospital’s emergency department often remain in waiting areas for extended periods before being advised to seek treatment elsewhere.
Recently, a patient suffering from severe pain was referred to another hospital after being told that no beds were available for admission.
Hospital sources say that even some routine procedures are not being carried out at the facility due to capacity constraints.
Routine cases also being referred
Reports indicate that certain cases, including minor appendicitis surgeries, are being referred to other hospitals.
Similarly, patients diagnosed with ascites, a condition involving fluid accumulation in the abdomen, have also reportedly been directed to other healthcare facilities for treatment.
JPMC confirms arrival of referred patients
The in-charge of the emergency department at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) confirmed that a considerable number of patients arrive at the hospital daily after being referred from Indus Hospital.
The steady flow of referrals reflects the ongoing movement of patients between hospitals within the city’s healthcare system.
One of Sindh’s largest hospitals under heavy patient load
Indus Hospital, a charitable institution supported by the Sindh government, is among the largest healthcare facilities in the province.
The hospital operates with 1,350 beds, 36 operating theatres, outpatient department services, and modern emergency facilities.
According to hospital figures, the institution treats more than 765,000 patients annually, while over 4,000 patients visit the hospital every day, highlighting the significant demand for its services.
