Mayo Hospital offers modern kidney stone treatment

ISLAMABAD: In an important development in kidney treatment, Mayo Hospital has introduced Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), a modern procedure providing comprehensive and less invasive stone removal solutions.

Led by Prof Dr. Fawad Nasrullah, Chairman of the Urology Department, this initiative offers patients a minimally invasive approach to stone removal.

The procedure involves making a small incision in the lower back, through which a tube equipped with a microscopic camera and advanced surgical instruments is inserted. This facilitates the precise identification and removal of kidney stones, which can be fragmented and drained effectively.

About the efficiency of the procedure, Prof Nasrullah said it can be completed within one and a half to two hours, with patients being discharged after a short postoperative observation period.

He credited the King Edward Medical University Vice Chancellor Prof Mahmood Ayaz for the reinstatement of PCNL at Mayo Hospital.

This treatment option offers patients with kidney stones a less invasive alternative to traditional surgical interventions.

Prof Nasrullah reaffirmed the Urology Department's commitment to providing comprehensive care, as per the healthcare policies of the Punjab government.
