Dow University opens free Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center at Ojha campus
KARACHI: Under the administration of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Pakistan’s first free Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center has been established at the Ojha Campus, marking a major milestone in the country’s respiratory healthcare infrastructure. The facility was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nazli Hossain at the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases (OICD).
The newly established Dr. Syed Ashiq Hussain Rehabilitation Center, located on the first floor of the OICD, has been named in honor of the institute’s former head, Dr. Syed Ashiq Hussain, recognizing his contributions to pulmonary medicine and patient care.
A new chapter in patient rehabilitation
During the inauguration, Professor Dr. Nazli Hossain also formally opened the Intravenous Admixture and Compounding Pharmacy at the institute. The event was attended by Professor Iftikhar Ahmed (Director, OICD), Dr. Murtaza Soho, Dr. Niaz Soomro, Dr. Faisal Asad, Dr. Faisal Fayaz Zubairi, and other faculty members.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Nazli Hossain said that Dow University remains committed to providing state-of-the-art healthcare services, adding that the establishment of these two centers reflects the institution’s dedication to expanding free, high-quality facilities for patients in need.
Comprehensive and free respiratory care
Professor Iftikhar Ahmed shared that the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases provides a full range of free diagnostic and treatment services for patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. He highlighted that the institute also offers a dedicated ICU facility for TB patients, a service rarely available free of cost in other institutions.
During a briefing, it was noted that hundreds of patients with respiratory and chest diseases visit the Ojha Institute daily. For many years, there had been a strong demand for a rehabilitation center that could help patients recover and restore lung function following treatment.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center has appointed qualified physiotherapy doctors who will provide specialized rehabilitation services to help patients regain strength, improve breathing capacity, and return to normal life.
Focus on innovation and patient safety
At the inauguration of the Intravenous Admixture and Compounding Pharmacy, the Vice Chancellor was briefed on the pharmacy’s objectives. The facility will provide ready-to-use syringes of high-cost and fast-acting medications used in the treatment of chest diseases, ensuring precision, safety, and prevention of misuse.
Professor Dr. Nazli Hossain commended the efforts of the OICD team and expressed her vision for further enhancements at the institute. She emphasized that proposals for patient-friendly infrastructure and technological advancements would be encouraged and implemented to strengthen patient care delivery.
During her visit, the Vice Chancellor also observed the IV dilution process, asked questions about the drug preparation methodology, and praised the pharmacy’s adherence to safety and quality protocols.
