New mpox case reported in South Punjab, patient shifted to ICU at Nishtar Hospital
MULTAN: Health authorities in South Punjab have confirmed a new case of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), raising renewed concerns about the spread of the viral disease in the region. The patient, a 20-year-old man from Muzaffargarh district, is currently under treatment at Nishtar Hospital Multan and has been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to the severity of his condition.
According to a spokesperson for Nishtar Hospital, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the mpox virus in the patient. Hospital officials also disclosed that the patient has tested positive for HIV, a factor that has complicated his clinical condition and increased the risk of severe illness.
This is the second confirmed mpox case reported at Nishtar Hospital in 2026. The hospital administration stated that two mpox patients are currently being treated at the facility under strict medical supervision.
Hospital tightens isolation, safety protocols
In response to the new case, Nishtar Hospital has further strengthened its isolation wards and infection prevention measures. Dedicated medical staff have been assigned to manage mpox patients, and strict protocols have been implemented to limit contact and reduce the risk of transmission within the hospital.
The hospital spokesperson said that healthcare workers are following standard infection control guidelines, including the use of personal protective equipment and controlled patient movement within designated treatment areas.

Provincial health authorities have initiated contact tracing and epidemiological investigations to determine possible sources of infection and identify individuals who may have been exposed. Surveillance teams are working in coordination with district health offices to monitor potential new cases in Muzaffargarh and surrounding areas.
Health officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report symptoms such as fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and body aches to nearby health facilities without delay. They emphasized that early diagnosis and isolation are critical to preventing community transmission.
