Karachi polio vaccination campaign starts with enhanced security measures
KARACHI: A citywide polio vaccination campaign has officially begun in Karachi today and will continue until September 7, with authorities implementing a comprehensive security plan to protect health workers and vaccination teams.
According to a spokesperson for Karachi Police, a total of 10,463 police officers and personnel will be deployed across the city to provide security coverage during the campaign. The deployment aims to ensure the safe and smooth execution of the vaccination drive, which is critical for Pakistan’s ongoing fight against polio.
The campaign will see the participation of 15,511 vaccination teams and 24,003 workers, tasked with reaching children in every neighborhood. Additional Inspector General (IG) Karachi confirmed that all workers will be provided with full security throughout the campaign.
Karachi Police Chief has directed zonal officers to personally supervise and monitor the security arrangements in their respective jurisdictions. This step is intended to strengthen accountability and guarantee that all teams are safeguarded as they perform their duties in the field.
Pakistan remains one of the last two countries where polio is still endemic, and vaccination drives like this play a pivotal role in protecting children from the crippling disease. The enhanced security measures in Karachi reflect the seriousness of the effort and the government’s commitment to ensuring every child receives the polio vaccine safely.
