Breast Cancer Awareness Month highlights urgent need for women’s health action in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: October marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global campaign dedicated to spreading knowledge, encouraging early detection, and saving lives. Around the world, the movement focuses on prevention, screening, and treatment, reminding communities that early action can drastically improve survival rates.
In Pakistan, where one in every nine women faces the risk of developing breast cancer, the month carries particular urgency. Despite the alarming figures, experts stress that the disease is treatable in up to 90 percent of cases if diagnosed at an early stage.
To mark the occasion, First Lady Asifa Bhutto Zardari has issued a heartfelt message urging women to prioritize their health and confront the threat of breast cancer with seriousness. She emphasized that timely detection and preventive care remain the most effective tools in fighting the disease.
The First Lady encouraged women to:
- Perform regular self-examinations
- Schedule clinical check-ups after age 30
- Undergo mammography screenings after age 40
She further advised seeking immediate medical consultation if any unusual symptoms are detected.
Asifa Bhutto Zardari also highlighted the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, noting that diet, exercise, and preventive habits can reduce the risk of developing cancer. She praised the dedication of doctors, nurses, volunteers, and awareness organizations who are working tirelessly to educate and support patients nationwide.
Calling for collective responsibility, the First Lady appealed to families and communities to provide emotional and practical support so women can access timely diagnosis and treatment. Her message aligns with this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month theme, reinforcing that prevention, awareness, and support can save lives.
