New retinal implant shows promise in restoring central vision for people with advanced AMD

A new retinal implant may help restore central vision in people with advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) — a leading cause of blindness in older adults worldwide.

Researchers estimate that about 196 million people globally are living with AMD, and roughly 8 million of them have an advanced form called geographic atrophy, where retinal cells gradually die, leading to irreversible vision loss. While some medications can slow progression, there is currently no cure for AMD or geographic atrophy.

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has found that a wireless retinal implant called PRIMA could restore partial central vision, allowing patients with geographic atrophy to regain key visual functions such as reading and recognizing faces.

What is the PRIMA retinal implant?

Developed by Dr. Daniel Palanker, Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford University, the PRIMA system is a tiny wireless photovoltaic chip implanted at the back of the eye. It works in combination with special glasses that transmit visual information to the chip, allowing users to see images in real time using natural light as its power source.

In this new clinical trial, 38 participants aged over 60 from 17 medical centers across five European countries received the PRIMA implant. Within weeks of surgery, participants began using the glasses designed to work with the device.

Of the 32 patients who completed the one-year follow-up, 26 experienced clinically meaningful improvements in visual acuity, gaining an average of five additional lines on the standard eye chart — and in some cases, as much as 12 lines. Moreover, 27 participants regained their ability to read letters and numbers using the system.

“It’s the first time that any attempt at vision restoration has achieved such results in a large number of patients,” said Dr. José-Alain Sahel, Distinguished Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and co-lead author of the study.

“More than 80% of the patients were able to read letters and words, and some are reading pages in a book. We are exploring new methods to further improve their quality of life and help them recognize faces and emotions again.”

Expert opinions highlight promise and challenges

Dr. Benjamin Bert, a board-certified ophthalmologist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in California, called the PRIMA system “fascinating” because it integrates with the eye’s remaining functional retinal anatomy while replacing the damaged photoreceptor layer.

“As people live longer, age-related conditions like AMD are becoming more common,” Dr. Bert said. “Any technology that can partially restore vision can significantly improve independence, safety, and overall quality of life for aging patients.”

However, Dr. Bert noted that long-term data on the device’s durability, surgical safety, and upgradability are still needed before widespread clinical adoption.

Dr. Jonathan Gloth, a vitreoretinal surgeon at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, described the findings as “promising but preliminary.”

“Although the initial sample size was small, the results are encouraging,” he said. “The implant’s position in the subretinal space allows better resolution and visual acuity than earlier prosthetic systems. However, further large-scale studies are needed to confirm safety, as over 80% of patients reported serious adverse effects during the trial.”

A new frontier in vision restoration

The PRIMA implant represents a significant breakthrough in retinal prosthetics, providing renewed hope for those living with geographic atrophy — a condition that robs millions of their ability to read, drive, or recognize loved ones.

While complete vision restoration remains out of reach, experts believe the PRIMA system marks a major step toward functional sight recovery, paving the way for future innovations in ophthalmic biotechnology and neural visual interfaces.
