UHS launches revamped MBBS and BDS curricula after province-wide academic overhaul
LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has formally launched the final version of its MBBS Modular Integrated Curriculum 2K23 and the second revision of the BDS Integrated Curriculum 2K25, marking the culmination of one of the most extensive academic reform exercises in Pakistan’s medical education history.
The launch ceremony, held at UHS Lahore, brought together senior government officials, university leadership, former health ministers, principals of medical and dental colleges, and statutory body members—reflecting the scale and significance of the reform.
A landmark moment for medical education in Punjab
Punjab Minister for Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Khawaja Salman Rafique, who attended as chief guest, formally inaugurated both curricula by making them live on the UHS website. Congratulating the UHS leadership and faculty, he described the reform as “work not of moments, but of generations,” calling the participants “legends of medical education.”
Highlighting emergency care as Punjab’s most pressing healthcare challenge, the minister stressed that improved medical training is central to saving lives. He also outlined major government initiatives under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, including expanded cardiac surgery programmes, transplant services, dialysis facilities, mobile clinics, and new hospitals across Punjab, alongside large-scale recruitment of healthcare professionals.
Curricula to be implemented across all colleges
The newly approved curricula will be implemented in all public and private medical and dental colleges of Punjab. Formal approval was granted through a joint meeting of the UHS Syndicate and the Boards of Studies for Medicine and Dentistry, with Registrar Kiran Fatima presenting the resolution later signed by board conveners, the syndicate chairman, and the provincial minister.
Integrated, skills-driven learning model
UHS Vice Chancellor Prof Ahsan Waheed Rathore said the reforms had full backing from the Punjab government and reflected decades of global discussion on improving medical education. He noted that curriculum reforms were not limited to MBBS and BDS, but extended to nursing and postgraduate programmes as well.
The new clerkship-based, integrated model, he said, would significantly enhance clinical competence, professionalism, and patient safety among graduates.
Unprecedented faculty participation
UHS Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nadia Naseem revealed that the MBBS Curriculum 2K23 underwent three consecutive years of stakeholder review, involving around 700 faculty members, while nearly 1,000 medical and dental academics across Punjab contributed to the development and refinement of both curricula—an effort described as unprecedented in Pakistan.
The reforms place strong emphasis on faculty development, professionalism, ethics, research orientation, emergency life-saving skills, early clinical exposure, and self-directed learning, moving decisively away from rigid, discipline-based teaching.
What’s new in MBBS and BDS training
The MBBS Modular Integrated Curriculum 2K23 introduces a five-year integrated structure, embedding clinical exposure from early years and mandating emergency skills training to better prepare students for real-world healthcare settings.
The BDS Curriculum 2K25 (Version 2.0) follows a similar integrated framework, aligning foundational sciences with clinical dentistry and community oral health needs—ensuring dental graduates are clinically competent and socially responsive.
Broad academic endorsement
Senior academic leaders attending the ceremony included vice chancellors of major medical universities, former senior bureaucrats, and principals of medical and dental colleges from across Punjab. Many described the launch as a historic turning point for medical and dental education in the province.
UHS officials confirmed that both curricula have been aligned with national regulatory requirements and international standards, with the overarching goal of producing healthcare professionals who are clinically skilled, ethically grounded, and responsive to societal needs.
