LAHORE: For the third time in days, Lahore’s public hospitals are making national headlines for all the wrong reasons. Image have surfaced from Ganga Ram Hospital showing a security guard collecting blood samples from a patient—a task strictly reserved for trained lab technicians.

The clip has triggered widespread concern over patient safety, hospital protocols, and administrative oversight. Hospitals are meant to be sanctuaries of trust, but this latest incident threatens to erode the most fundamental principle: that patient care is always in the hands of qualified professionals.

Authorities take notice

Medical Superintendent Dr. Arif confirmed that both the security guard and his supervisor were immediately removed from duty. The private security company responsible was fined PKR 50,000 for poor performance.

Dr. Arif also announced the formation of a three-member inquiry committee, led by AMS Admin Ganga Ram, Dr. Zill Huma, tasked with investigating the incident in detail. The hospital emphasized that the blood bank operates under the supervision of the Blood Transfusion Authority, ensuring regulatory compliance and safety standards.

Inquiry committee findings: systemic negligence uncovered

The fact-finding report of the four-member inquiry committee has exposed alarming administrative lapses:

The blood bank was managed under IBTS control, but evening and night shifts lacked an assigned Blood Transfusion Officer.
Nursing staff were unavailable during critical hours, forcing partial staff deployment instead of full coverage.
The security guard was posted at the blood bank gate and reportedly assisted technicians during peak hours.
The committee recommended complete staffing in all three shifts, hiring additional lab technicians, and strict action against absent personnel.
The security guard and supervisor were formally removed, while the Chief Security Officer received a warning.
The report demanded urgent administrative reforms to ensure patient safety and proper duty roster implementation.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Arif stressed that all possible measures are being taken to improve blood bank operations, including staff availability and administrative oversight, to prevent any future lapses.

A deeper crisis in Punjab’s public hospitals

This incident is the latest in a string of alarming breaches in Lahore’s public healthcare system. Just days ago, Lady Willingdon Hospital was at the center of two controversies:

• Viral OT video: Doctors were allegedly filmed “racing” during simultaneous C-section surgeries, sparking suspensions and a government inquiry.
• Unauthorized anesthesia: A security guard was reportedly allowed to administer anesthesia, exposing systemic administrative lapses and patient safety risks.

These events together highlight a pattern of negligence, lack of supervision, and administrative failure that could have fatal consequences. Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique has emphasized strict accountability under PEEDA regulations, framing these incidents as warnings to all public healthcare facilities.

Patient safety cannot be compromised

For patients, the message is clear: trust in hospitals depends on strict adherence to SOPs, ethical conduct, and professional oversight. From operating theatres to blood banks, any lapse risks lives, erodes public confidence, and exposes systemic vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s healthcare institutions.
